Reid Cycles Launch Global Environmental Pledge

Reid Cycles is best known in Australia for their retail stores in Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne of the same name that sell budget priced bicycles. But this Melbourne based business also has significant international operations. According to their website they’ve expanded into other countries including in the following order since 2014: England, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, Singapore, USA, Spain, Ireland, Iceland, Hugary, UAE, South Korea, Argentina, Denmark, France, Chile, Canada and South Africa.

At the end of 2019 Reid Cycles launched an environmental pledge that can now be read in full on their website here.

In summary it says Reid commits to planting a tree for every bike that they sell.

“We have responsibility as a good-manufacturing business to offset the carbon that we are using to make our already sustainable products, bikes and what better way to do this than planting a tree,” the statement says. “This is more of a moral obligation for us than a business choice.”

“To make the biggest impact we can with our tree planting, we have partnered with the amazing www.edenprojects.org, who will be planting the trees on our behalf. They have planted more than 265 million trees since starting their project and we’re honoured to be the latest partner to contribute to this.

“Eden Reforestation Projects is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to provide fair wage employment to impoverished villagers as agents of global forest restoration. They hire the poorest of the poor to grow, plant, and guard to maturity native species forest on a massive scale. Their “employ to plant methodology” results in a multiplication of positive socio-economic and environment measures. By the year 2020 their objective is to plant a minimum of 100 million trees each year and to offer hope through the employment of tens of thousands of people in countries where extreme poverty is rampant and we’re glad that we’re able to partner with them this year to make this happen.”

According to the FAQ’s in the Eden Projects website, the cost of planting a tree ranges from US$0.10 to $0.35. (A$0.15 to $0.51). This includes all related expenses and the price variance depends upon the nation in which the program is operating. They are currently planting about 4 million trees per month across a range of countries where they employ local village labour to propagate seeds and plant the trees.
