Bike industry waste facts:
E-waste - E-bike sales have increased 500% since 2017, we urgently need an industry best practice for recycling old bike batteries.
Tyres and inner tubes - 44,000 tonnes of bicycle tires and inner tubes go to landfills globally per year which could be diverted to recycling initiatives.
Metal recycling - generates 5% of the energy required to make new metals.
Carbon - now a popular material in our industry, has limited recycling options and providers.
Cardboard is one of the biggest waste streams for bike stores, recyclable only 5-7 times.
Single-use waste soft plastics, foam packaging and zip ties common in bike packaging contribute to 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste in Australia.
Chemicals - Corrosive chemicals in bike workshops have the potential to enter Australia's waterways and pollute.
Renewable energy - Australia needs 70% of businesses to switch to renewable energy sources to maintain our resources.
