Cycling Economy Report Offering Update on Value of Industry

The second instalment of a national report on the state of Australia’s bike and scooter sector will be officially released at a cycling industry awards function in Canberra this month.

The second Australian Cycling and eScooter Economy Report will provide critical data to all governments on the size and importance of the bicycle and scooter sector to Australia’s economy, when the document is launched at the 2023 Australian Cycling Luminaries Awards dinner at Parliament House on Wednesday 15th November.

When the inaugural report was released in late 2021, it focused considerable mainstream media attention on the value of cycling for the Australian economy.

The 2021 report, spearheaded by peak cycling advocacy group We Ride Australia and produced by international accounting firm Ernst & Young, calculated the cycling industry in this country had a total direct industry output of $6.3 billion.

The Cycling Luminaries Awards are held by We Ride Australia to recognise outstanding contributions by volunteers, organisations, businesses, government officials and professionals to promote cycling in Australia.

Award Contenders

A Sydney enterprise at the heart of measures for greater sustainability in the bicycle sector, Revolve ReCYCLE, is among the finalists for this year’s awards.

The bicycle recycling venture is a finalist in two categories, for the Bike Culture Award and the Social Impact Judges Recognition Award.

A co-chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Cycling, Member for Swan Zaneta Mascarenhas, led an event at Parliament House last month to officially launch the awards dinner.

“This is an exciting opportunity to promote the amazing people, places, and programs from across the country that make Australia a better place to ride a bike,” she said.

“There are many people who play a significant role in making cycling a big part of the Australian way of life.

“I can’t wait to recognise them at the dinner at Parliament House in November.”
