Schwalbe – Growth in Gravel
– Sponsored Content –
Gravel is a strong growth area and Schwalbe knows it. Releasing their new ‘Race’ model isn’t just about adding a new tyre, it’s equally about completing their gravel range and providing a suitable option for just about every terrain and all riding conditions.
There are now five key tread patterns for the growing gravel bike market. They start with the G-One Speed; with a comparatively smooth low-profile dimpled pattern it’s optimised for tarmac and hardpack dirt roads. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the G-One Ultrabite; an aggressive studded design that caters for loose gravel through to mud.
The new addition, the G-One R falls in the middle of the range; rather than dimples, Schwalbe employs closely spaced ‘boomerang’ shaped tread blocks that are designed to provide a blend of climbing traction and low rolling resistance. In relative terms, it falls between the G-One Bite and the G-One Allround.
The smooth-rolling pattern is complemented by the ‘Souplesse’ casing (AKA. Super Race). It’s the same construction as you’ll find on their high-end Pro One road tyre and it’s said to lend extra suppleness and improved ride quality to this gravel tyre. Extra layers are added for general robustness and the crown is topped with their V-Guard puncture protection. Despite the added beef, the G-One R remains light for a gravel tyre; claimed weights are 480g in 700x40c and 520g for the 45c version.
Having a supple casing isn’t just for comfort, it’s also said to help the tyre better follow the trail surface. Traction is further enhanced through their Addix Race compound, which is designed to blend traction and longevity.
Regardless of which tyre you choose within the gravel range, they’re all tubeless compatible via their TLE system—just run sealant for ongoing puncture protection and the ability to run lower tyre pressures.
Tan sidewalls give the G-One R a distinctive look and they’ll retail for around $119.
