Crankworx Coming to Cairns

The world’s biggest mountain bike festival, Crankworx, has added Cairns to the event’s destinations in 2022.

Smithfield Mountain Bike Park will host this year’s third stop for the Crankworx World Tour, from 5th to 9th October, giving the bike industry another major platform to promote its products and services to the Australian market.

Crankworx World Tour managing director Darren Kinnaird said he had been working with organisers in Cairns since 2018 to make the Australian even happen.

“Cairns is one of a kind, with the wet tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, and has epic riding throughout,” Darren said.

“Plus, there is major passion locally for mountain biking, not to mention a history of running major mountain bike events.”

Crankworx Cairns CEO Matt Hilton said: “Having travelled to Rotorua and seen the festival in action there, and the effect it’s had on the local community, it’s easy to see what an opportunity this is for both Cairns and Crankworx,”

The festival’s elite, amateur and kids racing is complemented by demonstrations and a trade expo.

Crankworx was founded in British Columbia in 2003 as the Whistler Summer Gravity Fest, as mountain biking gained traction in the Canadian region.

It was renamed Crankworx the following year and grew quickly as it helped entrench Whistler as a heartland for mountain biking.

The event expanded into Europe in 2012 and now includes a stop at the Austrian city of Innsbruck.

NZ was incorporated into the world tour from 2015 and Rotorua will host the fourth and final round of this year’s series in November.

Cairns has been locked in to host Crankworx through to 2024.
