Nominations Open for Cycling Luminaries Awards
Sydney, NSW
Nominations for the 2022 Cycling Luminaries Awards opened this week to celebrate the people, places and programs that get people riding bikes in Australia.
This year’s award winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney on 25th November, as part of the inaugural Australian Micromobility Conference, an event that brings together industry leaders, national advocacy organisations and government decision makers.
The 2022 Luminaries Awards, held by peak advocacy group We Ride Australia, have been given added poignancy by the Covid pandemic, according to We Ride Australia executive officer Peter Bourke.
“Covid has highlighted the value of bicycles and riding to so many Australians, and the national awards celebrate the investment and leadership to support all riders,” he said
“The awards were not held during Covid, so this year is a unique chance to celebrate three years of achievements.
“The awards have been recognising the incredible diversity of cycling programs and achievements since 2002 and we know there are many more stories to be told.
“So if you are aware of a person, group or project making a big difference for people riding a bike anywhere in the country, nominate them now for an award.”
Nominations are open to any individual, group, business, event, organisation or school that has achieved significant change for cycling, and inspired or influenced others.
Previous winners include a program for pupils on Goulburn Island, 300km north east of Darwin, that boosted attendance at school, as well as Barossa Council initiatives to boost cycle tourism in the South Australian wine region.
In 2017, a special Women’s Achievement Award was included in response to outstanding achievements by the female nominees that year.
