Major Specialized Dealer Sells to Trek

The Cyclery, a large, extremely well presented store in Fyshwick, ACT has just been acquired by Trek Bicycles Australia.

For owners Trevor and Janie Rix, it’s the second time that they’ve successfully sold a bike shop.

In 1991, they originally started working in what is now known as Lonsdale Street Cyclery, in Braddon, immediately to the north of Civic, Canberra’s CBD.

They bought the business in 2005 and sold it in 2017 to the current owner, John Ross.

Meanwhile in 2012 they opened The Cyclery in Fyshwick, running both shops simultaneously for five years. For the past two years after the sale of their Lonsdale St store, they’ve solely been running Fyshwick store, until its sale that Trevor was very happy to announce to The Latz Report.

“Pretty soon after the sale we’re going to start a year of traveling,” he said. “It might include some bike touring. We were so busy working when we were younger and other people of our age at the time were travelling. Now it’s our turn!”

Trevor said that most staff would be transferring across to Trek. “It’s been a really good result,” he concluded.

Trek already has another company owned store at Majura Park which is part of the Canberra Airport bulky goods retail precinct, located 5.8 km to the north east. The other Trek store is the former On The Rivet store at Phillip, near Woden in the southern suburbs. There are also two independent Trek dealers in Canberra, Rideshop and Bike Culture.

Meanwhile Specialized bikes will continue to available in Canberra via ACT Bike Superstore in Mitchell and at Lonsdale Street Cyclery.

In related Canberra news, 99 Bikes is planning a third Canberra location. Although the site has already been selected, 99 Bikes would prefer not to announce further details until all agreements have been finalised, which will be in early 2020.
