Sea Otter Australia Postponed – Again

Rather than delaying what was increasingly looking like an inevitably forced decision, Christian Haag, Executive Officer of Sea Otter Australia recently wrote to exhibitors and entrants with 12 weeks’ notice, advising them of the postponement of this year’s event.

Sea Otter Australia had been scheduled to be held on this October long weekend but has now been scheduled for 30th September to 3rd October 2022 – the same weekend one year later.

“After reviewing the impact that the new Delta variant of COVID is having on communities across the country and the now normalised ‘go fast-go hard lockdown’ response from state and territory governments, it’s clear that a Sea Otter event unaffected by COVID in the coming 12 weeks is highly unlikely,” Christian told exhibitors.

“The safety and welfare of our Sea Otter family is paramount, as is our desire to ensure that we deliver excellent value for the investments made by exhibitors, riders and spectators alike. Unfortunately, we are no longer confident that this is realistic as a result of the new COVID variants.”

Sea Otter 2021 which was to be held at Stromlo Forest Park, Canberra ACT, had a long list of major exhibitors booked including Advance Traders, Apollo, Bicycle Parts Wholesale, Bicycles Online, Bikebox, Bikecorp, Bosch, Canyon, Cassons, Cuore, DSG, Echelon Sports, Fox Racing Australia, Global Fitness & Leisure, KWT, Lusty, Pon.bike, PSI, Pushys, Rowney Sports, Sola, Specialized, Trek, Thule and Yakima.

Exhibitors and ride entrants are being given the option of transferring their bookings to 2022 or refunds.

Meanwhile, the Fitz’s Challenge, which is a one-day endurance road event that has been run for 31 years by Pedal Power ACT, has been postponed by three weeks. It is now scheduled for Sunday 24th October. The Fitz’s Challenge was originally going to one of the Sea Otter Australia events, to be held on 3rd October.

Of course, it’s still far from certain what travel restrictions will be in place in Australia, even at the October date.
