How Fast Will Ebike Sales Grow?
Manuel Marsilio General Manager of the Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry (CONEBI) has predicted that the European ebike market will triple in the next five years.
Last year 2.5 million ebikes were sold in Europe. Mr Marsilio is predicting annual sales of 7.5 million units by 2025.
Latest sales figures show that 920,000 ebikes were sold in Germany alone during the first six months of 2019. That almost equals the 2018 year total of 980,000. Meanwhile ebike sales in the Netherlands are up 36% for the first eight months of 2019 as measured by value, not units.
Of course there is no guarantee that what happens in Europe will translate to Australia.
But one by-product of the massive growth in sales has been a rush to build more ebike factories and develop new products. Eventually this investment should result in better products at lower prices, worldwide.
Cycle sport’s governing body the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) has already embraced ebike racing with the first men’s and women’s World e-MTB Championship rainbow jerseys being awarded at the 2019 MTB Worlds this August.
