Science in Sport’s newest nutrition range, its Beta Fuel Dual Source Energy Gel, had a perfect launch when multiple Grand Tour winner Chris Froome used it to fuel his memorable 80km solo breakaway victory in the 2018 Giro d’ Italia.

SiS was supplying Team Sky (now Ineos Grenadiers) with the product prior to its release on the market and when Chris revealed postrace the nutritional secret weapon behind his extraordinary stage win, its popularity among elite and recreational competitors was virtually assured.

Fast forward to this month’s Tour Down Under (TDU) for evidence of Beta Fuel’s sustained demand among professional and amateur riders.

While SiS continues to sponsor Ineos Grenadiers – as well as the Australia, British and German cycling federations – competitors from many of the other teams have been actively sourcing SiS’s Beta Fuel and its Beta Fuel + Nootropics gels to fuel their 2023 TDU campaigns.

BikeSportz Imports, which distributes SiS in Australia, reported selling the products to a considerable number of riders from several teams at the TDU.

The Beta Fuel Dual Energy Source Gel’s maltodextrin to fructose ratio of 1:0.8 allows athletes to access 17% more carbohydrate, compared to the more standard 2:1 ratio. There is 40 grams of carbohydrate in each sachet and the formula can be more efficiently digested.

Much of that demand can be attributed to Beta Fuel’s market leading formula, which enables users to access carbohydrate with greater efficiency and at a much faster rate.

The gel’s maltodextrin to fructose ratio of 1:0.8 increases the percentage of ingested carbohydrate that is oxidised to 74%, compared to 62% for the more standard 2:1 ratio.

As a result, users can take in up to 120 grams of carbohydrate per hour, significantly higher than the standard rate of 60-90 grams using other energy supplements.

Each Beta Fuel gel sachet includes 40g of carbohydrate, while the industry standard for gels is typically 20 to 25 grams.

The 1:0.8 ratio also helps reduce the sensations and other symptoms of stomach fullness when compared with a ratio of 2:1, including performance debilitating gastrointestinal irritations that can be caused by sports drinks and gels.

SiS’s Beta Fuel + nootropics takes it a step further by combining the Beta Fuel Dual Energy Source Gel’s 40g of carbohydrate with 200 milligrams of caffeine, 250mg Cognizin Citicoline, one gram of the amino acid L-taurine and 200mg of Theanine. In combination, these ingredients boost mental performance during physical exertion, while reducing the ‘jitters’ that can be experienced when using caffeine on its own.

Scientifically Proven Over Many Years

SiS was established in 1992 and, while many sports nutrition brands have come and gone, the London-based company has been developing its products over more than 30 years.

That long-term development of products and the company’s enduring reign as an industry leader have led to partnerships with many of the world’s top sports associations and clubs, including USA Swimming, the English Institute of Sport and Manchester United.

While the brand gained an initial foothold in Australia through cycling and triathlon, it now has partnerships with a wide variety of elite sporting organisations, including several AFL and A League clubs, the Hockeyroos and Sailing Australia.

Outside of BikeSportz’s sponsorship partnerships, many other Australian clubs and organisations trust SiS products to maximise the performance of their athletes.

The Beta Fuel range also includes chews that can make refuelling more accessible during rigorous training and racing.

Similarly, the brand’s affiliation with some of the world’s most high-flying athletes inspires many amateur athletes to seek SiS products when they walk into a bike shop or general sports store.

The company’s intense product testing, down to each batch of product, is also becoming increasingly important for recreational sportspeople. While quality assurance has long been a key concern at an elite level, other sports nutrition consumers have a greater awareness and expectation about product testing.

While SiS’s long history provides certainly of ongoing supply for retailers, it also enables them to offer a comprehensive range of nutrition products, including electrolyte powders and tabs, gels, bakes and protein powders.
