Tamworth Store Owners Looking to Take a Back Seat

Jamie Stanton and Andrew Dehm have built their Tamworth bike store into a thriving little business over the past seven years. However, the business partners are discovering that success is eating into their very motivation for getting the bike industry – riding.

Their solution? The former military colleagues have put their store, The Broken Spoke, on the market, with the hope they’ll be able to remain as members of the team.

While the pair are still enjoying their career change, they suspect it might be even more fun without the responsibility of being the store owners.

“We think it’s a good opportunity for someone to come in and take over, with us still here,” Andrew said.

Andrew, who joined Jamie as a business partner four years ago, is also the manager of the Mt Borah Mountain Bike Park at Manilla, 47km north of Tamworth.

He has built the private facility’s 15km of trails over the past 12 years and, with the park set to host a round of the NSW State Gravity Enduro Series in 2023, he’s keen to spend more time working on the trails.

Given his trail building and MTB park management roles, it’s not surprising The Broken Spoke is primarily a mountain and gravel bike store.

“Jamie was a road rider who wanted a career change but selling road bikes is a hard one because everyone wants something slightly different,” Andrew said.

Norco, Orbea, Merida and Trek have been the central brands at the mid-sized store, which has become a hub for riders using the Mt Borah and Tamworth mountain bike parks.

Jamie and Andrew are joined three days a week by a casual mechanic but they’re still “flat out with sales and servicing”.

“We thought things might slow down after Covid at some stage but right now things are still 100 miles an hour,” he said.

“I’m working six and a days a week and, as someone who’s always ridden and raced, I just want to spend more time on the bike.”
