Bosch Launches New Motor and ABS Braking Options

As we recently reported here, Bosch did not launch any new hardware at their annual media event at Eurobike on Tuesday 2nd July instead focusing upon software. But on 1st October they launched several new products.

According to their latest media release, Bosch employs a staggering 428,000 people worldwide (as at 31st December 2023), generating annual sales of 91.6 billion euros (A$147 billion) in 2023. Within their workforce are 90,000 working on research and development, of which roughly 48,000 software engineers. Of course, only a tiny fraction of these totals relate to team members developing e-bike drive systems, but the company clearly has the resources to release highly developed and refined products.

Performance Line CX Motor

Bosch say that their latest Performance Line CX motor combines reduced noise with 100 grams less weight. This motor is designed for high performance mountain bikes and other models, offering 85 Newton metres of torque up to 600 watts of peak power and 340% of rider power input support.

Its sensors measure the rider input 1,000 times per second.

Bosch says, “Inertial sensors (IMU) also measure acceleration and rotation speeds in six dimensions, and recognise inclination and tilt angles as well as vibrations. This means that the eMTB “knows” how steep the ascent is and whether e-bikers are on a forest path or a root-covered trail.”

One of the problems with increasingly high power, high torque e-mtb drive systems has been getting traction on hilly starts, particularly with loose surfaces, without spinning the rear wheel.

The new system features hill start assist which uses sensors to provide optimum initial power in proportion to the uphill gradient.

ABS Pro Braking System

Bosch launched its first ABS braking system at Eurobike in 2022 but has now added to high performance versions, the ABS Trail Pro for mountain bikers and the ABS Race for enduro racers.

New Batteries

Bosch’s new PowerTube batteries include the PowerTube 800 which is both the largest capacity PowerTube battery to date but also the highest energy density at 205 Wh/kg.
The new PowerTube 800 and PowerTube 600 are identical in length, so they can be interchanged on the same bike. They can also be run as dual batteries, which means a total capacity of up to 1,600 Wh in the case of two PowerTube 800’s.
